Ways to Manage Acidity at Home

Acid reflux is a common problem that affects several individuals also referred to as heartburn, the condition is normally as a result of an imbalance in the amount of acid produced by the stomach and in a certain situation will result to the acid finding its way to the esophagus and causing some discomfort.

Acidity in the stomach can cause a host of other problems asides from acid reflux.

Stomach ache, gas, nausea, and bad breathe are some other signs that accompany the condition.

While most people suffer acidity from time to time, there are individuals that are bothered by the condition more than others.

The cause for most people includes eating too much spicy food, lack of exercise, irregular eating habit, excessive alcohol consumption, and stress.

A health condition known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) can be responsible for regular heartburn.

Taking care of this condition can reduce the frequency of the problem.

When individuals surfer acidity, there is one simple way of handling it.

Antacid, an over-the-counter medication can be very efficient in handling the condition, but if you want to try some other methods, there are lots of home remedies for acidity.

Here, we will consider some of the commonest remedies for the condition.


1. Apple Cider Vinegar

For those that know that the apple cider vinegar is acidic in nature, this will be a surprise.

The truth, however, is that it has an alkalizing effect and will help to relieve acidity in the stomach.

You can mix one or two teaspoons of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar in a cup of water and take it once in a day, or two, at most.

Alternatively, you can take a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, and add a cup of water immediately. Each of the methods can be very effective and work really fast.

2. Banana

You must have known that the banana has so many health benefits, but do you also know that it can be very helpful in managing stomach acid?

It is probably the simplest and most effective way to handle acidity in the stomach. For a start, bananas are rich sources of potassium and can control the production of acids in your stomach.

There are also some components in the fruit that are believed to increase the production of mucus in the stomach.

The mucus will help to prevent the stomach tissues from any harmful effect of excessive acid.

The fact that bananas also contain enough fiber also means that eating some of it will help to speed up digestion and keep the recurrence of acidity under check.

By simply eating a ripe banana, you can remedy an acidity issue without any further effort. You can eat an overripe banana for fast relief of acidity.

3. Basil Leaves

Basil leaves are known for their soothing and carminative properties and this can be quite helpful in taking care of acidity in the stomach.

It will also with such other symptoms as gas and nausea. Once you get the first sign of acid upset, chewing some basil leaves thoroughly immediately can be quite helpful.

Alternatively, you can boil 3 – 5 basil leaves in a cup of water and lets it simmer for a few minutes before drinking. You can sweeten it with honey to make the experience more enjoyable.


4. Buttermilk

Buttermilk is also very helpful with stomach acidity. It contains lactic acids which will definitely normalize acidity in the stomach.

While you can buy buttermilk and drink immediately to help with acidity, you can make it better for fast relief.

Simply grind 1 teaspoon of fenugreek seeds with a little water to make a paste. Add the paste to a glass of plain buttermilk and gulp it down.

You can equally add black pepper or ground coriander leaves for the best result.

5. Cinnamon

The cinnamon is a well-known spice that has so many health benefits, especially for the digestive system.

It can work as a natural antacid that will encourage digestion and absorption, helping to take care of stomach acidity and gas at the same time.

You can add the cinnamon powder to your soup or salad for its many benefits but to help with acidity, you can boil 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder in a cup of water.

After boiling, let the tea steep for a few minutes before drinking.

6. Cloves

Cloves have been used for treating digestive problems for a long while in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine.

It has a carminative effect that will ultimately help to normalize stomach acid production in the stomach.

It can equally help to prevent the formation of gas in the stomach. You can chew 2 – 3 cloves thoroughly until you obtain a good amount of the juice.

You can equally eat a crushed mixture of cloves and cardamom to help with acidity and the accompanying bad breathe.


7. Coconut Water

Coconut has the ability to turn your stomach’s highly acidic content to alkaline in moments.

Once you have the feeling of acidity, you can quickly reach out for coconut and get enough quantity of the water into your system.

Since it also contains a good amount of fiber, coconut water can also help to improve digestion and prevent the recurrence of acidity.

Coconut water is also believed to produce mucus that can help to protect the stomach from the negative actions of the excess acid it produces at times.

8. Cold Milk

Milk can also be very helpful in handling stomach acidity. It will help to stabilize gastric acids in the stomach and provide relief for symptoms of acidity.

Milk contains calcium in a reasonable amount and it helps to prevent the build-up of stomach acid.

There is no form of preparation required here; once you feel the symptoms of acidity, simply grab a glass of cold milk and drink to get relief from the symptoms.

9. Cumin Seeds

Cumin is known for being a great acid neutralizer. The seeds are very efficient in treating acidity at home.

In addition to providing relief for acidity, cumin seeds can help in managing digestion and relieving stomach pain.

There are different ways you can use the seed. Firstly, you can crush some roasted cumin seeds, stir into a glass of water and drink after each meal.

Alternatively, you can boil 1 teaspoon of the seed in a cup of water, strain, and drink after a meal.

You can equally mix 1 teaspoon each of cumin seed powder, coriander seed powder, and fennel seed powder and sugar in one-half cup of water and drink on an empty stomach.


10. Fennel

Fennel is another seed that has carminative properties and can help with a number of digestive problems including acidity.

It is quite efficient in relieving stomach gas too. After a heavy/spicy meal or when you have already noticed sign of acidity, just chew some fennel seeds.

You can also add a teaspoon of fennel seeds in a cup of water, strain, and drink to help with symptoms.

11. Ginger

Ginger is known to have several health benefits and it shouldn’t be surprising that it is part of the home remedies for acidity.

It has excellent digestive benefits and can also help to neutralize stomach acids.

There are several ways of using ginger: you can chew a fresh slice; add grated ginger in a cup of hot water; or have a spoonful of ginger juice twice a day.

Next time you have an episode of acidity, it is advisable to try some of these home/natural remedies first.
